Floating just off the southeastern coast of Africa, Madagascar is a vast, untamed and endlessly diverse island, offering some of the most rewarding adventure travel in the world.
From dramatic sandstone canyons and jagged limestone pinnacles, to rainforest trails, remote rivers and lively coral reefs, Madagascar is a natural playground for travellers seeking authentic exploration.
Roads are rough, distances are deceptive and journeys take time, but that is part of the magic. Here, slow travel is not a trend; it is the only way to experience everything that makes the country so incredible.
Best time to visit
We recommend visiting during the dry season, from April to October, when trekking routes and national parks are most accessible. For wildlife lovers, September to November is particularly rewarding in the eastern rainforests, where many endemic species, including the country’s iconic lemurs, are more active and visible. July and August are also excellent months for spotting humpback whales along Madagascar’s coastline, while October offers the chance to encounter whale sharks in the warm waters surrounding the island.
Tours that go the distance
For clients who love to hike or are seeking active adventures, Madagascar’s central-south and eastern regions offer great opportunities for trekking-focussed itineraries and our expert guides can help your clients discover some of the island’s most striking landscapes. Isalo National Park captivates with its deep canyons, natural pools and sculpted sandstone formations, while the towering limestone forests of Tsingy de Bemaraha create one of the world’s most surreal hiking environments. On the edge of the Andringitra Massif, Tsaranoro offers dramatic cliffs, remote trekking routes and beautiful mountain scenery.
Travellers looking for a real challenge can summit Boby Peak, Madagascar’s highest accessible mountain. Our specialist team knows the routes well and provide in-depth safety briefings and seamless operational support.
All our itineraries can include exciting guided night hikes in search of Madagascar’s fascinating nocturnal animals!
Experiences beyond the trail
Madagascar also has a wide range of exciting water based activities.
Paddle along rivers that carve through deep rocky gorges lined with tropical forests and bamboo groves, such as the Tsiribihina River, where multi-day canoe trips combine wildlife, waterfalls and remote village encounters. Or head to the southwest (Madagascar’s rafting hub) where rivers like the Mandrare and Manambolo offer exhilarating grade II-IV rapids that are sure to get your pulses racing.
One of our most unique experiences is our immersive cruise aboard a traditional dugout canoe. Visitors leave behind the familiar world and enter the magical Sakalava Kingdom, where semi-nomadic ethnic groups offer a cultural insight.
The pristine Radama Archipelago south of Nosy Be consists of islands fringed by palm trees and white sand beaches and offers great snorkelling in warm, crystal-clear waters. Guests can walk through small fishing villages, meet traditional local leaders and enjoy freshly caught seafood prepared by the crew directly on the beach.
Cruising by canoe is beautifully simple: waterfalls become showers, beaches become dining rooms and the star-filled sky becomes your ceiling. Entirely environmentally friendly, these trips are designed with sustainability in mind, using only recyclable materials onboard and leaving minimal impact on the fragile ecosystems visited.
Malagasy people
Some of the most memorable adventures in Madagascar come from meeting local people. Authentic immersive itineraries sensitively visit remote villages rarely touched by modern life. These unique encounters also make the island so compelling.
Travelling slowly allows visitors to experience this side of Madagascar fully, whether sharing conversations in highland villages, learning about ancestral animist beliefs, discovering the artistry of the Zafimaniry people or spending time with the Betsileo communities whose terraced rice fields define the central highlands.
